Welcome to Sacred Sacred Heart School Kindergarten!
Welcome to Sacred Heart Kindergarten Home Page!
All you need to know about the class each week will be posted on this site.
Our school theme this year is Are you ready to be a disciple of Jesus?
Additionally, each month we will look at a saint who represents our theme and a virtue we are trying to strengthen and demonstrate through our actions and words.
Our saint this month is our saint is St. John Paul II.
Our focus for this month is doing. All year, we have been preparing ourselves to be disciples and now we are practicing doing it. Showing all the gifts we have acquired and putting them into practice.

Subject focus for this coming week:
Religion: This week we will look at celebrations and love of life. We want to recognize that God wants us to be happy and recognizing our worship of Him brings us joy. We have so many reasons to be happy and to be grateful for our lives!
If you would like to learn more about the Catholic faith, Sacred Heart has a subscription to the streaming site FORMED.org. To access it you can log on to https://formed.org and sign up. It will ask for your zip code, 17603 and Sacred Heart will pop up, enter your name and email and you will be in. There is content for adults and children.
ELA: We are focusing on the parts of words. We have learned about digraphs, blends and are now working on syllables. We know that digraphs are 2 consonants that, when next to each other make a new sound such as th. We know that blends are 2 consonants that, when together, maintain each of their sounds. We are working to understand that words can be broken into chunks called syllables. When we begin to encounter longer words we can break the words into syllables to read a smaller chunk and then put them together to read the whole word. Vowels control syllables. If you want a refresher on syllables use this graph.
Concepts of print to know: By now, all the children should be using a capital letter for the first letter of their name and all the rest are lower case. We are looking at before, after, beginning, end, middle, these are all concepts that your child needs to understand as they learn to recognize letters, words and sentences. We have a few children who are not solid with reading from left to right and top to bottom. Using your finger to follow the path of words in stories you read can help. We are looking for periods to end our sentences. Most of the children are proficient with recognizing words, where they begin and end. A few are still not understanding the space between words helps to differentiate each word. While you are reading with your child, occasionally point to the word so they can see each word individually. We are looking at main idea and details that contribute to explaining the main idea. We are looking at story sequence.
Heart Words: my, the, in, is, for, a, go, to, it, I, am, here, go, and, at, we, like, be, not, can, are, do, you, did, will, too, with, all, me, so, no, was, now, have, said, come, down, say, they, that, what, where, must, ate, our, who, this, we, he, she, but, want, there, saw, own, please, out, one, two, four, eight
RED Folder Instructions: Please try to consistently return the RED folder each week and help your child practice with the activities inside. We like to say, practice makes better, and this is true with reading and math concepts. It doesn't need to be long practice times but practice several times each week. This will give you a snapshot of how your child is progressing with the skills and concepts they are learning, also. Thank you for helping me with the skills your child needs to practice.
Read every day! (RED)That is the way to fluent reading. Each week, your child will get 2 books to read to you. Please do not read to your child, help them read to you. They are learning to sound the words out and recognize heart words. They may need a little help for the first few weeks but allow them to try first. If you are noticing they are not recognizing the heart words, help them practice them with flash cards and by writing them. Have your child reread the books multiple times during the week and they can read to anyone! There will be a math activity each week for you to play with your child. These activities will help to make the skills solid. Please return the RED folder on the day written on the outside of the folder. I will fill it with new activities and return it to you that same day. If your child forgets to return the folder on their day, send it back when you can and I will try to get it ready to come home that same day. Please let me know if you have any questions.
Math: This week we are still looking at time. We will discuss how long it takes to do some things. We will look at the movement of time in the year (seasons, months, calendar) and we will look at the movement of time during a day. We will explore the names we use for different times of a day (morning, afternoon, evening, night) and the parts of time in a clock (hands, minutes, hours, am, pm). Any exploration you do with your child at home, noticing the time of day, the date and the hour will be beneficial.
Wish List:
Thank you for your help.
